Get Involved

As a volunteer at the Welcome Desk, you are our first contact that neighbors coming to the Community Center interact with. Your role is to help refugees and walk-ins to the Center get their questions answered and help them find the right information, whether to find the restroom or which clinic office they need to go to. Training is provided to help you know all the answers!

Assist first through fifth graders with homework once a week from 3:30pm-5:00pm. Sessions are Monday through Thursday. Regular volunteers have an opportunity to encourage the same 2-3 students each time they serve.

The Community Center has a Resource Room that we use to store diapers, hygiene items, and other goodies that we distribute to refugees. As a volunteer organizer, you will help keep these items organized as we prepare for our monthly Resource Distribution.

Refugee Registration is an easy to way to get to meet lots of refugee neighbors. On Mondays from 10am-12pm, neighbors can come to the Community Center to register and get an appointment for diapers at Resource Distribution. You will gather information about their family to put into our database and get them set up for Resource Distribution.

Kids Club is a Saturday morning program for kids in elementary school. It includes a Bible lesson, as well as snacks, games, & crafts. We are thrilled to partner with Love Is ministry and serve kids from ages 5-12. Kids Club is a great way to build relationships with the kids in the neighborhood.

Volunteers demonstrate Jesus' love to the kids while encouraging them to get to know more about Jesus. This is a friendly and fun way to invite kids into conversations about Jesus.

By spending time with our refugee youth, you are empowering them as they learn to thrive in a new culture by helping them progress socially, emotionally, and spiritually. As you meet these middle and high schoolers where they are, you are helping them to establish a pathway to success in life and conversations about Jesus.

Volunteer shifts are most Wednesday evenings 5:30PM-800PM during the school year.

Weekly tutoring on Saturday mornings from 9:45am - 12:30pm is a great way to build a relationship with youth at the NCC in a practical way through helping them with their schoolwork! Lunch will be provided.

Women's Conversation Club is a great way for women to connect with refugee women learning English in a small group setting. Volunteers are given a list of questions to use as a springboard for conversation to help refugee women practice speaking English.

Join us Wednesday's from noon to 100pm for lunch conversation with other men.

Each month, the Community Center holds a resource distribution event to provide diapers and hygiene items to approximately 300 refugee families in Vickery Meadow. The distribution event is held outdoors at the Community Center to encourage social distancing. There are several roles for individuals as well as groups and whole families to serve together.

During our monthly Resource Distribution, we hold a baby shower for refugee women in Vickery Meadow. Expecting mothers registered in our database are invited to celebrate their upcoming birth as their due date approaches. Volunteers help with the set up, hosting of the party, leading games and conversation with our moms-to-be. This opportunity is especially great for women's small groups!

The Friday before our monthly Resource Distribution, we need people to help set up the different stations for Distribution. As one of the many moving parts of Distribution, this opportunity helps make the Saturday run smoothly. This is a great role for organizers and preppers!

Home visits allow us to connect on a much more personal level with our families at the Northwest Community Center as we get to know more of the community. We look forward to being able to visit more of the students in our After-School and Youth programs, as well as the new moms from the Baby Showers.

Getting a job can be tough, even when you've been in America your whole life! Job Assistance volunteers help refugees with filling out job applications, building their resume, and practicing their interview skills.

Employers interested in hiring refugees can participate in an upcoming job fair at Northwest Community Center.

Welcome teams are the first face and welcoming crew for new families when they come to Dallas. Welcome teams have four main responsibilities: 1) airport pick-up, 2) apartment set-up, 3) grocery pick-up, and 4) providing a culturally appropriate first meal. This is a great opportunity for families to serve together, build relationships with our new international neighbors, and walk alongside them as they adjust to life in the United States.

Deliberate, a longtime Northwest partner, is a local non-profit which focuses on the collection and distribution of furniture to alleviate the burden on families. Independent, one-time opportunities to serve families behind-the-scenes include: storage unit organization, apartment set-up, and furniture pick-up. Special opportunities include Apartment Setups, loading/unloading furniture, and storage space organization.

Join us and our NEW ministry partner Mercy Street as we seek to cultivate mutually transforming relationships through Christian mentorship! This program matches  mentors with Vickery Meadow students entering the 4th and 5th grade. There are also opportunities to mentor high school students.

Each Christmas, Northwest Bible Church collects toys for our refugee neighbors to shop for their kids and give back to their community!

We are collecting non-perishable breakfast foods at the Northwest Community Center to help stock the food pantry at Tasby Middle School in Vickery Meadow throughout the school year. You can drop off your donations at the NCC office during business hours.

• Kid-friendly breakfast snacks (Nutrigrain/Granola Bars)

Refugee 101 is a series of courses that are held periodically throughout the year for our volunteers to learn more about refugees. Some courses involve hearing from  refugees themselves about their journey that brought them to the US. Other courses have organizations and missionaries that educate us on how to best minister to and how to begin a conversation about Jesus.
